छोटू राम के बचपन का समय उनके जीवन का सबसे अधोरा और गरीब समय था। उनके परिवार को खाने के लिए अधिकतर समय भैंसों और गायों को चराने में बितता था। छोटू राम की मां बहुत धैर्यशील थीं और उन्होंने अपने बच्चों को समय-समय पर भोजन की व्यवस्था की। छोटू राम की शिक्षा के लिए भी परिस्थितियां बहुत मुश्किल थीं, लेकिन उन्होंने अपनी मां के साथ गायों के साथ खेतों में काम करते हुए भी अपनी शिक्षा पूरी की।

छोटू राम को अपने समाज के लोगों के प्रति अपनी जिम्मेदारी का भाव बचपन से ही था। वे अपने समाज के लोगों की समस्याओं को सुलझाने के लिए कई उपाय करते थे। उन्होंने समाज के गरीब लोगों के लिए खाना वितरित करने की योजना बनाई और इस योजना के तहत वे रोटी के टुकड़े बाँटते थे।
